Apps to identify fonts.

Apps to identify fonts.

There are no such apps. Honestly!! You don’t believe me? Well there is one. What the Font. Yes the app version of their web site. There are many apps to download a wide variety of fonts, but only one to identify font of the text.

You would want to know that:

Being small in size of just2.7MB, it holds an average rating of 3.5, in playstore. It is undoubtedly very much looked for app and has crossed 500+ downloads in Google’s Play store. Quite a lot of people what to know what font they are using and are cautious about selecting font as well. Whatthefont is a saviour for all the designers.

Freaking features:

The app seeks permission to access media, camera, etc from our phone. It needs them to help you figure out which font is being used. Take a picture using the app and it returns the font name of the text found in the picture. Simple! Isn’t it? You could even upload a file and find out the font. I know, “A file could contain multiple fonts”. Absolutely! The app is smart enough to ask you which text’s font you are looking for. Yes, as soon as you take a picture of any text, the app identifies all the text bits and highlights them. And then, it asks you to select text and takes it as the input. Then lists out the fonts matching that with the selected text.  So, it is giving you options. That really means you don’t have to open another tab in the browser to search for similar fonts. Once you select one of the text blocks of what the app has identified, it then displays that text in a regular font and gives an edit option to user. This helps user to correct if any typos found. This way, user can find the preview of the exact text in various similar fonts as well. Now when you select any of the fonts from the resultset, it justs takes the device width to show how beautiful the font made your text. It provides a share option, using which you can spread your message to the world. You can share the text through all the popular social networks. In short, all you got to get the font is to either take a picture or upload a picture of text from the device. Then as the app processes the picture to identify the text blocks, select any one block to know its font.

Pitfalls:

What if you took a selfie with this app? Does the app crash? Well, app doesn’t crash but unfortunately  it doesn’t know that humans could make a mistake uploading wrong file. And it returns some random  gibberish font as resultset. Instead, if it could return a message saying it couldn’t identify any text from the picture, it would be saving time for both user and itself. There are many other web applications that help you find out the font, used in many formats of files.  However, with respect to android applications, Whatthefont has been very helpful.
